Mercury Retrograde

The planet Mercury, cratered surface against a starfield, evoking the retrograde phase

Quick answer (50 words): Mercury Retrograde is the optical illusion that occurs three to four times a year when the planet Mercury appears to move backward through the zodiac for about three weeks. Mercury rules communication, technology, travel, and contracts — so during retrograde, those areas tend to glitch, slow down, or need a second look.

What is actually happening in the sky

Mercury isn't really reversing direction. From Earth's vantage point, Mercury laps us in its orbit, and during the lap it appears to slide backward against the background stars — a bit like how a slower car you're overtaking on the highway looks like it's drifting backward. Astronomically: optical illusion. Astrologically: a deliberate window for review.

In 2026, Mercury will retrograde roughly three to four times — typical for any year. Each retrograde lasts about three weeks, and there's a "shadow period" of one to two weeks before and after when its effects already start to bleed in.

What it tends to affect

  • Communication — Texts misread, emails to wrong people, conversations get tangled
  • Technology — Devices crash, apps update and break, files vanish
  • Travel — Flights delayed, GPS fails, packed wrong bag
  • Contracts — Misread fine print, agreements stall, signatures need redoing
  • Old connections — Exes text. Forgotten people resurface.

The clearest pattern: anything that asks Mercury to push forward gets friction. Anything that asks Mercury to go back and look again — editing, re-reading, reconnecting, repairing — works beautifully.

What to actually do during a retrograde

The astrology internet has trained people to panic. The actual practice is much simpler:

  • Re- verbs: review, revise, repair, reread, reach back out.
  • Avoid signing major contracts if you can wait until after the retrograde ends.
  • Back up your data on day one. You will be glad.
  • Don't make Mercury the scapegoat for things you'd avoid anyway. The retrograde doesn't make a bad job offer good or a bad relationship workable.

How it shows up in horoscopes and tarot

When your monthly horoscope opens with "Mercury goes retrograde on the 14th," that's your cue to slow communication-heavy decisions for the next three weeks. The houses Mercury crosses during the retrograde tell you which areas slow down — see Houses and Aspects for the specifics.

In a tarot reading drawn during Mercury retrograde, cards that come reversed often double down on the "look again" theme. The Hermit, the Hanged Man, and the Eight of Cups all show up more often than usual — cards about reflection rather than action.
