Aspects (Astrology)

A circular geometry diagram with coloured lines connecting points around a circle (square, trine, conjunction).

Quick answer (50 words): Aspects are the geometric angles that planets form to one another in a birth chart or in the current sky. The five major aspects — conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition — describe whether two planets cooperate, compete, or merge. Aspects are the verbs of astrology: they tell you what the planets are doing together.

What an aspect actually is

If houses tell you where a planet's energy lives and the sign tells you how, aspects tell you who's in conversation with whom. When two planets sit at a meaningful angle — say, exactly 90° apart, or 120° — they pull on each other, and that pull shapes how their energies blend.

Aspects are measured in degrees of the 360° wheel. Astrologers allow a small "orb" of inaccuracy (usually a few degrees) because the effect doesn't switch off the moment the angle isn't perfect.

The five major aspects

  • Conjunction — 0° — Two planets fuse — their energies act as one. Can be powerful or messy.
  • Sextile — 60° — Easy support, opportunity. You have to actively use it.
  • Square — 90° — Friction, tension, push. Forces growth, often uncomfortable.
  • Trine — 120° — Natural flow, gift, talent. Easy to take for granted.
  • Opposition — 180° — Two planets pull from opposite ends — balance vs. tug-of-war.

The "hard" aspects (square, opposition) are not bad — they are the ones that make something happen. The "soft" aspects (trine, sextile) are pleasant but can produce people who never push themselves.

Aspects in real horoscope language

When your horoscope mentions "Venus square Mars," it means the planet of love and the planet of desire are in a 90° tension — expect attraction with a side of conflict. "Sun trine Jupiter" reads as a lucky, expansive day. "Saturn opposite Moon" warns of emotional weight or distance from family.

For compatibility, comparing two charts looks for aspects between one person's planets and another's. Your Sun trine their Moon is the famous "feels like home" combination. Your Mars square their Mars is two people who'll have great chemistry and constant low-grade fights.

A note on retrogrades and aspects

When a planet like Mercury enters retrograde, the aspects it forms during that period are read with extra care — the energy of the aspect doesn't disappear, but it tends to manifest internally (rethinking, revisiting) rather than as fresh action. In tarot work, hard aspects often show up as the Tower or Five of Swords moments; trines look more like the Star or Six of Wands.
